Beneath the Surface, drawing from observation – Talk by Julia Midgley

14 October 2023 @ 2.00pm - 3.00pm

| £2

Refreshments included. Book via Ticketsource.

As a reportage or documentary artist and printmaker Julia Midgley’s work has taken her all over the country including Chester and Cheshire.

This talk will focus on work produced since the 1980’s which records:- excavations of Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre; Objects and drawings found in the archives of Cheshire Records office; Training activities at The Cheshire Yeomanry, C Division, Fox Barracks, Chester; and the many objects recorded with drawing in ‘County Conundrum’.

The ‘County Conundrum’ was commissioned to commemorate the Centenary of the then Cheshire County Council. The image contains up to 40 items all of which are found in the county or the city of Chester. At the time of its publication a competition was held to see who could identify all the items. The winner correctly identified 24.

“The above projects taught me so much about the history and activities of my home county, by
scratching the surface history revealed itself”. – Julia Midgley. RWS. RE MAFA
