Noun. swagger portrait. A portrait commissioned by someone rich or famous to emphasise their status, importance etc. Lots of scope there then, including pictures by celebrated portraitists working in the Grand Manner, but also many by artists celebrated for other subjects and styles. This lecture by Adrian Sumner looks of course at Van Dyck, Reynolds and Sargent, but also sets out to uncover gems from the Renaissance, the Impressionists, the Post-Impressionists and the great Moderns.
