The earldom of Chester was founded c.1070 by William the Conqueror. The title has been granted to the heir apparent to the English throne since 1301, and Prince Charles was created Earl of Chester in 1958. The Norman earls of Chester have symbolised Chester’s pride in her antiquity since the 16th century. They and their arms are depicted in paintings, stained glass, statuettes and shields around the city. Join a member of the Guild of Chester Tour Guides to discover the Norman earls of Chester.
