The German invasion of Belgium in autumn 1914 forced millions of Belgians to flee their homeland. 250,000 entered Britain as refugees and approximately 2,000 settled in Cheshire for some or all of the war. Whilst relations between the refugees and locals initially appeared warm and hospitable, documentary evidence – which you can see during this interactive event – shows that life was not always easy for the newcomers.
A University of Chester event.
