Annual events such as sports shows and rush-bearing ceremonies were an important way for local communities to reaffirm their Lakeland identity. They also offered opportunities for the region’s sense of place to be presented to outsiders. As Dr Rebecca Andrew will explain, these occasions promoted an idealised version of ‘traditional’ country life, but were also increasingly shaped by an awareness of external influences and outside judgements.
