Exploring the rich and often surprising history of art in Russia, beginning with Scythian gold from the seven centuries BC, then a thousand years of icon painting from the very first icon, The Virgin of Vladimir, to the 19th-century flowering of Realist and Symbolist art. Includes all the great names, from Andrei Rublev, via such ‘Wanderers’ as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin, to Somov, Bakst, Vrubel and the Ballets Russes.
