From about 600 onwards, the Old English speakers north of the river Humber were united into a new Northumbrian people with their own kings. This lecture by Dr Thomas Pickles will use Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed around 731, and the excavated royal vill at Yeavering, Northumberland, to bring that courtly society to life.
