From about 900 onwards the first kingdom of the English was forged, stretching from the Channel to the Tees, and aspiring to rule territories up to the Firth of Forth. This lecture by Dr Thomas Pickles will use the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Latin histories, royal charters (land grants), and Old English poetry to throw light on the kings of the English and their courtly society.
