From 1384 onwards the Valois dukes of Burgundy expanded their authority into the Low Countries to create the wealthiest and most powerful state in western Europe. In the process, they almost transformed themselves from dukes into kings. This lecture by Dr Katherine Wilson will use ducal histories, accounts, inventories, surviving residences, and visual images to analyze the largest and most admired court in later medieval Europe.
