Pay at the door.
In the first of three lectures examining the English civil war of 1642-46 in this region, Professor Peter Gaunt explores Chester as a royalist stronghold and parliamentarian objective. He assesses the role which the city might have played, perhaps should have played and in reality actually did play in the war waged by the two sides, as seen from (often starkly differing) local, regional and national perspectives.
